The profile banner is the largest visual element a potential subscriber sees when landing on your page. While its importance fades after the person subscribes, it plays an absolutely crucial role in that initial visitor decision to subscribe.

For example: (350 New Subscribers / 10,000 Profile Visitors) x 100 = 3,5% Conversion Rate
$$ \frac{\text{350}}{\text{10 000}} \times 100 = 3,5 $$
This simply means that 3,5% of all people who visit your page end up subscribing.
